The Gallery Apart is proud to announce its collaboration with the young Italian artist Federica Di Pietrantonio who, in these extraordinary times we are living,through her work my life as yours suggests a vision incredibly related to the changes underway, as it usually happens to young people.

The raw material that Federica handles expertly and which is the result of her full knowledge and awareness is that tangle of feelings (frustration, melancholy, sadness, solitude) that the artists tries to push away from herself vehemently by sacking that universe of simulation which is the virtual reality of the social platforms and of the videogames. The antidote that humanity injects into the society is the collectivization of the privacy, an oximoronic operation aimed at transforming the private space into a public one; an attitude that Federica interprets not through voyeuristic or, even worse, narcissistic and self-referential mechanisms, but through the emergence of a narration that makes stories a means not an end, a product that crystallizes experiences and not a story that feeds on itself.

This explains why the stories told by Federica stem from virtual platforms and experiences, and that’s the reason why nearly always they involve an avatar. Whether it is a machinima (machine cinema or machine animation), or installations or paintings, Federica’s stories start from those places of virtual reality which offer her the possibility to proceed by translations, both when she exploits the most advanced technologies and when she returns to places of virtual archaeology (which for the artist have an aura of splendor and decadence), such as Second Life where her avatar Foxy lives, the inspiration of her series of paintings of the same name.

It is mainly in the painting, as in the great paintings on display in the exhibition, that the work of translation and transformation from the digital surface to the canvas manifests itself, that is from the virtual platforms from which her stories and her characters stem to the real surface of the canvas where, on the other hand, images assume an ideal value and therefore paradoxically virtual as it is universal. The private places of the artist are not only shared and made public but, through the utmost individual effort (by Federica who does not hesitate to expose herself), the viewer receives a general message to introject and to translate once again.

Even when the medium is a machinima, Federica acts by simulation extending an adolescent imaginary made of real people to the adult life and to the field of artistic expression. Through their digital alter ego, these people live in a world made not only of works, but also of interviews, presentations of exhibitions and poetics, creating a galaxy of participations and of artists that amplify the dimension of the work of art beyond the established borders of the bi/three-dimensional object or the art videos. The exhibition also features a live video shot in the spaces of the gallery through the webcam of a laptop by adding a virtual element to the scene to enable visitors to explore the work through a reverse path, that is transforming a public space into a private one.

Installations are a further expressive art technique through which the artist usually cancels the aesthetics of the objects, altering their use or, conversely, to give aesthetics to everyday objects. This is the case of the installation on display where two computer cases are emptied of their original function and communicating with each other in search of an almost personal relationship with the visitors who are encouraged to see more in the objects that they normally tend to overlook.

The exhibition my life as yours can be visited from June 9th at the gallery’s standard opening hours. There won’t obviously be the traditional opening, but the exhibit will be virtually and ideally inaugurated on Monday, June 8 2020, at 9.00 am, through the presentation of a video art by the artist on YouTube. From 6.00 pm, viewers will be able to interact with the artist through a live video on Instagram as well as with the gallery owners who, as it usually happens during exhibition openings, will welcome visitors into the gallery spaces and they will give information on the works as well as a preview of the exhibition.

The Gallery Apart è orgogliosa di annunciare l’avvio della collaborazione con la giovanissima artista Federica Di Pietrantonio che, nella straordinaria fase che stiamo attraversando, con my life as yours ci propone una visione incredibilmente connessa ai mutamenti in corso, come spesso accade ai ventenni.

La materia prima che Federica maneggia con la perizia che discende dalla cognizione di causa è quel grumo di sentimenti (frustrazione, malinconia, tristezza, solitudine) che l’artista cerca con veemenza di allontanare da sé saccheggiando quell’universo di simulazione che è la realtà virtuale delle piattaforme social e dei videogiochi. L’antidoto che l’umanità inocula nella società è la collettivizzazione della privacy, un’operazione ossimorica finalizzata a rendere pubblico lo spazio privato; un atteggiamento che Federica interpreta non attraverso meccanismi voyeuristici o, peggio, narcisistici e comunque autoreferenziali, bensì mediante l’emersione di una traccia narrativa che rende le storie un mezzo e non il fine, un prodotto che cristallizza le esperienze e non un racconto che si nutre di sé.

Ecco perché le storie di Federica nascono da piattaforme e da esperienze virtuali, ecco perché c’è quasi sempre un avatar di mezzo. Che si tratti di machinima (machine cinema o machine animation), di installazioni o di pittura, Federica sceglie come punto di partenza quei luoghi della realtà virtuale che le offrono la possibilità di procedere per traduzioni, sia quando si affida alle tecnologie più avanzate sia invece quando torna su luoghi ormai di archeologia virtuale (che per lei hanno un’aura di splendore e decadenza), come Second Life dove vive il suo avatar Foxy ispiratore dell’omonima serie di dipinti.

E’ soprattutto in pittura, come nei grandi dipinti esposti in mostra, che si manifesta chiaramente il lavoro di traduzione e traslazione dalla superficie digitale alla tela, cioè dalle piattaforme virtuali dove le sue storie e i suoi personaggi concretamente nascono alla superficie reale della tela dove invece le immagini assumono un valore ideale e dunque paradossalmente virtuale in quanto universale. I luoghi privati dell’artista non solo vengono condivisi e resi pubblici ma attraverso il massimo dell’affidamento individuale (da parte di Federica che non esita ad esporre se stessa) lo spettatore riceve un messaggio generale da introiettare e, per l’ennesima volta, ritradurre.

Anche quando il medium è un machinima, Federica agisce per simulazione estendendo alla vita adulta e all’ambito dell’espressione artistica un immaginario adolescenziale fatto di persone reali che, attraverso il loro alter ego avatar, popolano un mondo fatto non solo di opere, ma anche di interviste, presentazioni di mostre, esposizioni di poetiche, creando una galassia di interventi e di presenze d’artista che ampliano la dimensione dell’opera d’arte oltre i confini canonici dell’oggetto bi/tridimensionale o dell’opera video. Anche in mostra, un video in diretta girato negli spazi della galleria tramite la webcam di un computer portatile con l’inserimento in scena di un elemento virtuale consente al visitatore di entrare nell’opera, questa volta realizzando il percorso inverso, vale a dire convertendo uno spazio pubblico in uno spazio privato.

Un’ulteriore modalità espressiva è affidata alle installazioni attraverso cui l’artista solitamente si esercita ad annullare l’estetica degli oggetti, stravolgendone l’utilizzo, o al contrario ad attribuire loro un’estetica quando gli oggetti non ne hanno nella loro quotidianità. E’ questo il caso dell’installazione in mostra dove due computer case vengono letteralmente svuotati della loro funzione e messi a dialogare alla ricerca di un rapporto quasi personale con il visitatore spinto a vedere altro in oggetti che normalmente sfuggono alla sua osservazione.

La mostra my life as yours sarà visitabile negli orari di apertura della galleria a partire da martedì 9 giugno. Non è previsto ovviamente il classico opening, ma per tutti l’appuntamento sarà il giorno precedente, lunedì 8 giugno 2020 durante il quale dalle ore 9.00, collegandosi su Youtube, sarà possibile godere di un’opera video con cui Federica introdurrà idealmente e virtualmente la mostra. Dalle ore 18.00, poi, un collegamento Instagram in diretta consentirà di interagire con l’artista e con i galleristi che, come di norma avviene nelle inaugurazioni, daranno il benvenuto negli spazi della galleria fornendo informazioni sui lavori e offrendo una preview della mostra.
